Tax and Spend
I oppose any new taxes, period. In fact, the state’s biggest taxpayer watchdog group, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, has endorsed me as the true taxpayer champion.

Fiscal responsibility isn't simply balancing a budget. A better standard is to only grow the state budget at a rate of inflation factored by population growth. More importantly, I want to go to Austin to protect people from government. Fiscal responsibility is not only paying your bills but knowing what bills to incur. So we've got to make sure that we're funding essential elements of government and then decide what's not essential and reduce or eliminate those functions. When we have state surpluses - the state's rainy day fund - we need to start returning a portion of those surpluses that were taken from the taxpayers. This affords Texans the opportunity to spend, save, invest, and generate economic prosperity rather than government hoarding what is the rightful property of our citizens.

Health Care
As State Senator, I will work to mobilize the Texas State Senate in support of Attorney General Greg Abbott's effort to filing a lawsuit in opposition to this legislation. The action by President Obama and liberals in Washington, D.C. violates our freedom, will bankrupt the nation, and is outside the bounds of the Constitution.

Stopping Illegal Immigration
As you already know illegal immigration is a serious issue here in Texas and in the United States as a whole. Immigration is also an important issue to me personally. As a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, I wear the scars not only of an act of war, but of not knowing who is in this country and people violating our immigration laws.

I support the people of Arizona in their effort to reclaim their border. I would support similar legislation here in Texas with an emphasis on reducing illegal crossings and border crime. State action against illegal immigration is necessary because of the failure of the federal government to do its job. If Washington won't act then Texas must step up and work to stop the flow of illegals.

I'm also outraged by the notion of those who walk across our border illegally, and then without having contributed to our society demand taxpayer funded benefits in the areas of health care, education, and other social services. It's time to start showing compassion for the taxpayer who must foot the bill for a government that can't perform the basic function of securing our border.

Property Rights
States are the first line of defense in protecting property rights, which is an absolute fundamental right laid out in the Declaration of Independence. Texans should have the right to own property and enjoy the use of their property as they wish. This a sacred right that I will not allow to be discarded or undermined.

Sanctity of Life
Life is precious and sacred, and the unborn must be protected. We are endowed by our Creator, and we must be prepared to defend life from conception until natural death. There are many reasons that Texas must fight ObamaCare with every ounce of our being, one of the most important being to insure that we are never forced to use state tax dollars to fund abortions.

Gun Rights
As a veteran, Patron Life Member of the NRA, and a proud native Texan, I will fiercely defend our right to keep and bear arms. We must be vigilant to stop any liberal attempt to regulate gun ownership.

Economy
Government and elected officials are not the engine of job creation - the private sector creates jobs. The state legislature should promote an environment where free enterprise and free markets can thrive, then get out of the way. Government does act as a market force, in determining how difficult it is for business owners to create jobs and make a profit. The heavier the burden we place on businesses the harder it is for those businesses to create jobs.

State's Rights
The founders understood that the federal government was to execute the specific tasks as enumerated in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. Our founders understood that we promote the general welfare by limiting the role and function of the federal government in our daily lives, not promote the general welfare by being a welfare state. Conservatives know that for government to give to one citizen it must first take from another. Founding Father James Madison warned against using the General Welfare Clause as the means for government to intrude into our lives and erode our freedoms. Our founders were very clear, but unfortunately, we have lost that clarity over the generations and we need to get it back. The people of the state of Texas can manage their own affairs and do not require the adult supervision of Washington, D.C. As we are structured now the states, counties, and cities have become more like subcontractors to the federal government. It's time for the states to reassert their constitutional role and roll back an overreaching, overpowering federal government.
